Wedding tips: Guestbooks (Week 9)

Traditionally guest books were a bit of a boring part of the wedding.  You had a very formal book and people wished you well in it. It was bland and very unimaginative.
But these days there are so many options that are a lot more fun!

Engagement/personal photo book
I recently took a couple’s photos as well as some engagement photos we took for them and did a square coffee table book.  There were a few white blocks left open so that guests could write messages in it. The nice thing about the book is that you have a history of your relationship in book form now PLUS it’s entertaining for the guests.

Polaroid camera
Guests takes photos, stick them in the book and write messages next to it. This works especially well during pre-drinks.

Canvas
You print a big canvas with a photo of you and a blue sky or even beach in it.  The open space left on the canvas can be used as writing space for the guests.

Photo booth
This is a great way to get cool photos and maybe even write messages on the back. They normally print a copy for the guests as well the bridal couple.

Video Messages
A video booth where you leave messages “Big Brother” style.

Paintings
You can give people small canvasses or something to paint on.

It’s crucial to keep reminding your guests to make use of the message tools. They tend to leave it until the end of the evening and then you get half a book as all are tired and a bit tipsy! This works really well during pre-drinks. You can even designate a best man or bridesmaid to organise this.

Wedding tips: Confetti (Week 8)

The Confetti part of the wedding has and always will be a great deal of fun and makes for great photos. It’s the first time the guests can say congratulations and pour “blessing” over the couple.
According to www.weddinggs.co.uk:
“Confetti is Italian for sweets which in Italy are thrown over the couple as they emerge from the Church in that same way we use paper confetti. Raisins and nuts may also be used.
Before the use of paper confetti the married couple were showered with flowers, petals, rice or grains. This was to bestow prosperity and fertility on the couple.”

When choosing the colour of the confetti, always think about the background. E.g.. Green won’t be seen against green. Rice can be very small and not visible on photos. It is also hard and can end up in uncomfortable places!
Bubbles don’t work on a windy day. So think a bit practically about the confetti and the venue that you have. R50 notes works well!

Ask the MC to organize all the guests in two long rows that is wide enough. If the rows are too close together, visibility becomes difficult and guests step into the walkway and in front of me, which means your lovely wedding photos are ruined by your Aunt’s “Groenie die Draak” outfit.

Walk slowly if you are the star of the day and enjoy the petals and cheers. Don’t try to dodge the confetti. I promise it won’t hurt. If you smile and walk proud the photos will look great!

Wedding Tips: Contacts (Week 7)

Chances are you have a found a service provider for your wedding that are REALLY good at what they do. They have been doing it for a while. You absolutely love their work and can’t wait for them to be part of your wedding.
They know the industry and the different service providers. They know the good ones and the bad ones. Probably in different price ranges. Use this knowledge!

I will never refer someone if I am not truly confident in that service provider’s ability. I will also not refer someone if their price is out of line with their product. It just makes business sense for me to refer someone who I know have and
will do a great job for your wedding. I don’t take “kickbacks” at all. All my referrals are based on my confidence on the service provider.

This will probably ring true for any great service provider. So use their contacts and know that you probably will get a great product. (Dj’s, Venues, Videographers, Make-up artists etc, Musicians, Ministers)

Happy Hunting!

Ps. We went to U2 last night. TRULY AMAZING

Wedding Tips: Plains, Trains and Automobiles (Week 6)

Four to five years ago “The Wedding car” was still a major issue at weddings. It was almost as important as the wedding dress. Probably the groom’s stamp on the wedding day. Recently most of the weddings that we do all happen at the same venue, so the wedding car has become a bit redundant. I think the best route to go is to look at your personality and decide then. Maybe your new hubby is real Gearhead TopGear fanatic.  Then it might be a good idea to get a wedding car on the day.

If you get the latest Mercedes, BMW or Bugatti please make sure that your driver doesn’t believe he is Michael Schumacher. I have heard horror stories of the bride being in an accident on her way to the church. I once got left behind on the way to the church, because my old rusty Corolla could not do 200 km/h.  They had to wait for me at the church.

The old vintage cars are also very nice. However, if you need to drive far from the church to the wedding venue, it could take a very long time to get there, as they can’t go high speeds. Also, the car might even break down along the way.  Not ideal for a blushing bride.

I don’t prefer horse carriages. On a few occasions the owner/driver of the horse were trying to steal the show. Seriously people, I am not there to take photos of animals. It’s about the couple. This is not 50/50.

A nice to way to involve the groom’s dad on the day is to get him to drive the bride and her dad to the church.

Please also tell the car’s owner NOT to polish the tyres of the car. One don’t want black marks on the wedding dress.

Also ensure to give the driver proper directions and telephone numbers. Get his mobile number where possible.

Get your mom to pack some refreshments in a cooler back and provide you own music to really make the drive more fun.

Enjoy the ride!

Wedding tips: Time of your life (week 5)

This is probably the most important planning that the photographer can help you with for your big day. The reality is that you only have so many hours to get a LOT of stuff done.
You have to keep a lot of people happy plus you have to work with Mother Nature as well. Guests don’t want to wait long but you also want to get nice pictures. It is indeed a fine
balancing act to keep everybody happy.

It’s crucial to work out a realistic timeline. It’s no use to have one and then totally get it wrong on the wedding day. You are then going to put a lot of pressure on the venue (hot food),
guests, other service providers and most importantly yourself.

You must decide what parts of the day are really important and what parts aren’t. Before you send out invitations with ceremony starting time have a look at the following:

Preparation
This will depend on your make-up artist/hair dresser and driving time. I normally like to have the bride dressed and ready 45min before she needs to leave for the church. This gives enough time for bridal portraits and the bride will still get a few minutes alone to get her thoughts together.

Ceremony – 45min
On average it takes about 45min. This will normally include signing of the register. Obviously if the bride is very late this will also run late.

Pre-dinks vs. Starter
This is probably one part where I have a bit of a different view than the rest of the photographers. The pre-drinks is such a nice part of the day and it’s always sad if the couple misses out on this because they are taking photos. My suggestion is to rather join in the fun and miss out on the starter later. While we are busy with the couple shoot, the guests can enter the reception, find their seats and enjoy starters. This means our light will be better (softer) and you don’t have granny standing outside in the early evening cold because we are taking photos. People can take their seats, eat, drink and be merry. This means you will enjoy the couple shoot much more.

Group shots – 30 min
It’s great to do the group photos during the pre-dinks. This means it’s much more fun and it does not feel like waiting time. I prefer not to do table photos later on. That never work properly. If we have a list here you can get everybody somewhere on a photo.  This normally takes 1.30min per photo. 30 min in total is normally enough.

Couple shoot (Sunset) – 1 hour
For the photos it is crucial to know what time the sun sets. I love to start the couple shoot 40min before sunset. I normally shoot then 20 min into sunset. This means an average of 1 hour.
There are a few websites that you can check the times for sunset. www.timeanddate.com is one of them.
I always block out the couple shoot during this time and then fit everything around it. Winter weddings are easy as the couple shoot will probably happen right after the ceremony. Summer weddings I have done part of the couple shoot after main course (I am not joking!). It all will depend on what time your ceremony starts where we fit in what.

Speeches – 40 min
On average it takes 5 min per speech. And the groom’s speech is about 10-15min.  A total of 40min should be enough

Main course – 45 min
This takes between 30-45min depending on the size of the venue, guests etc.

First dance, Garter + Bouquet + cutting of the cake
It works well to open the dance floor and then 30 min later to do the cutting of the cake. Right after that you do garter and bouquet. This means you are only stopping the music once.
The MC can then also say what time desert will be served.
A Typical October Wedding in Cape Town where everything happens on the same venue will have the following timeline:

15:00 – Bride finished with make-up/Hair/Getting dressed
15:00 – Riekert Arrives at the Bride/a few Prep photos/Bridal Portraits/Bride with Bridesmaids
16:30 – Ceremony start
17:15 – Confetti + congrats + pre-drinks
17:45 – Group photos during pre-drinks
18:15 – Couple shoot start
18:40 – Guests enter venue
18:50 – MC – Welcome/Admin
18:55 – Starter served
19:05 – Tables cleared/Sparkling wine
18:49 – Sunset
19:10 – Couple shoot finished
19:15 – Couple make grand entrance
19:20 – Speeches
20:00 – Main course
20:45 – First Dance
21:30 – Cutting of the cake/Bouquet/Garter
22:00 – Desert

My packages are all 7 hours. This is normally more than suitable to fit everything in and not rush it. Certain times couples may book an hour or 2 extra depending on their needs.

Although crucial to the day don’t stress out to much on the actual day. The MC needs to watch the clock, not you. Relax and enjoy the ride!

Wedding Tips: The Ceremony (Week 4)

I’ve been to ceremonies in/on the following places:
Churches, cellars, gardens, mountains, lawns, Living rooms, patios, forests, fields, ballrooms and even on a boat once. I have seen very formal and very relaxed ceremonies.
Some awesome priests and even some dominees constantly giving me the evil eye. I think the most important tip I can give on this is to get the ceremony to reflect your personalities.
If you are fun couple get a fun minister/priest/officer etc.

If you get married outside, choose the spot wisely. Don’t stand in half shade. Shadow blotches made by leaves doesn’t flatter your smooth skin Rather have the sun directly behind your back than squinting all the time. The best is even shade.

Inside our outside keep the size and quantity of your décor/flower arrangements in mind. Less space means its more difficult capturing those intimate moments.

If there are windows and doors…open them. Natural light is your friend.

If you have a lot of people walking down the isle in front of you, give them a chance to clear the isle before you make your grand entrance.

Have your bridesmaids and best men take a seat with everybody else. Four people on each side can have the ceremony look very cramped.

I prefer the couple to be half facing the guests. It works well to have them standing towards the left or right on a 45 degree angle. The marriage officer would then be standing on the opposite side also at a 45 degree angle. Viewing angles are much better this way.

Block off certain parts of the church so that your guests aren’t sitting too scattered.

If the wedding is outside and very warm give the guests some water to take to the ceremony. Even music before the ceremony can break the ice a bit.

I’m off to the bushveld this weekend. See you next week!

Wedding Tips: Groups (Week 3)

This is an interesting one. I will get couples that tell me in the consultation they don’t want posed shots. No group shots. On the wedding day the parents decide that this is crucial and in the end our
whole timeline gets screwed over. The parents are frustrated, the couple are frustrated, I am frustrated and its chaos. In the consultation I thus always suggest that we do “group” shots.

Its nice if you can take a photo of ALL the guests at some point. This works well during the pre-drinks. Everybody is there. We have some nice light. I always ask the couple to organise a ladder
from the venue. The higher my shooting point are… the better the shot. We then proceed with “smaller group shots” directly after that. It works well to make a list beforehand. It takes about 1 min per photo
so the more photos you want, the longer its going to take. I think a good number is roundabout 12. Also think ahead about the structure of the list. Don’t put grandma in Photo 1 , 7 and 15. Rather group the photos
that she will be in together.

I always want the bestmen running the list. While I am busy with group 1 , they are busy getting group 2 ready. We also try to do these photos as close to the pre-drinks as possible.
If you can organise a nice couch this session can be very relaxed. You have the added advantage of having “levels”. See post for some great examples.

If unorganised this can be a very stressful chore.
If organised well this can be a fun part of the day.

I think its a nice to have and would suggest it for every wedding.

Wedding tips – All dressed up and somewhere to go (Week 2)

People always ask me when should they be all dressed up? What time will I be there? Who else must be there? So here is my view on the making ready process.

This is the start of your day. If your day starts crazy, it going to be chaos all over. Plan this day to the final detail. The photographer normally needs 30min uninterrupted time to get some nice
Bridal portraits. This does not mean people asking 1000 questions and you phone ringing of the hook. I want a relaxed bride that’s focusing on being a bride. Not an event organizer. You had 6 months to do that. Now you must BE a bride.

Other People – Think a bit about your personality. Do you like family around? Do you like friends around? Do you like being alone? Maybe just one friend? Make sure that you Bridesmaids are FINISHED 30 min before you have to get dressed so that they can help you.
You don’t want a bridesmaid running around looking for her earrings as you get into the Wedding car.
I don’t suggest doing family photos now as the Groom is missing. We will be doing family shots later on during the day. This also includes children. Rather get them to the church. Its less hassle

Timing – Make sure you have a proper time line. Giving enough time for everybody. The photographer is normally the guy that has to suffer as his time gets chewed into by late brides, hairdressers, Make-up artists etc. I don’t blame the make-up artist when
the bride was late to start with so please work out a realistic timeline for all your service providers.
If your dress has a 2km bow that has to be weaved or 3000 buttons that takes extra time, keep that in mind in your timing.
A typical Timeline would be:
12:00 – Hair and make-up start
13:00 – Break for Lunch, depends on your make-up/hair artist (make sure to eat enough, you are gonna need the energy)
14:10 – Make-up/hair finished
14:20 – Bride gets dressed
14:30 – Photographer arrives
14:40 – Last make-up touch-ups
14:45 – Bridal session start
15:15 – Photos with Bridesmaids/Mom/Dad
15:25 – Photographer leaves for venue to set up there.
15:40 – Bride leaves for bridal car
15:45 – Bridal car leave the Guesthouse (10 min drive)
16:00 – Ceremony start

If you have a veil we will probably put that in during the end of the bridal photo shoot.

I also to forgot to mention in my previous post to make sure there is enough light. This makes photos much easier.

If you have someone that stresses you out, don’t have them there. Give them something to do at the Church. This is the one day where you can be a bit selfish. They must just get over themselves.
Remember its your and your husbands day. You don’t have to please anyone. Plan well and enjoy this part of day as it can be SOOOO much fun

Wedding Tips: Hotels and Motels (Week 1)

After seven years in the wedding industry I have learnt a few things. Not only about wedding photography, but about almost every aspect of the actual wedding day.
Obviously my observations will be from a photographer’s point of view, but I do believe I can add a bit of value with my experiences.
Thus I have decided to share some bits and pieces I gathered over the years. You may or may not learn something. Feel free to email me and I might just answer it in a next post.

This week we are looking at getting dressed venues. A lot of venues nowadays have a “getting dressed/honeymoon room”. This is very handy since you are not driving all over the place before the ceremony.  People get dressed at guesthouses, their own or family homes. Although you can’t always choose where you are going to get dressed, I would recommend having a look at the following things:
· Space – More….is more. A cramped room can get very full with a bride, her mother, two bridesmaids, hair and make-up artists, videographer and photographer. If possible go bigger.
· Aircon – If its too hot the make-up won’t stick properly; you will be irritated, your mom will be irritated, everybody will be irritated, which means a bad start to the wedding day.
· Music – Some music to calm the nerves are always good. Even a mobile phone with music works well.
· Shadow outside – This helps me A LOT! The sun are very harsh in the afternoon after lunchtime (the usual time when brides are getting dressed for the ceremony late afternoon). Any shade will make the bridal shoot much easier. Trees are your friends!
· Guests – You probably don’t want your guests seeing you before the wedding. Don’t book them accommodation at the same place where you will be staying. Don’t stay where the guests will be parking for the wedding otherwise you will be trapped in the room.
· Beverages – Some champagne are always a good idea…but don’t go overboard.

I will hopefully add something every week so keep checking in for some more tips!

Is it bird? Is it plane? a camera!!

I recently came across this invention that unfortunately aren’t in production. Its called the Flee. According to the www.wallyou.com:

“This flying camera is a concept design by Turkish designer Hakan Bogazpinar and is titled ‘Flee’. here are cameras that can be bounced and cameras that can be lobbed ahead for surveillance. The Flee takes the concept of throw-able cameras to a ‘higher’ level. The Flee has two components: a digital camera and a Bluetooth receiver. Flee’s digital camera is a circular container that is enclosed in a round, lightweight ball made up of a crack resistant material. The ball is orange in color.
The circular digital camera is made up of a lithium battery, memory chip, Bluetooth chip, a CCD, and the lens. The orange ball camera is attached to an intelligent tail design that keeps the camera in an upright position while in flight. The tail design resembles that of a table fan. The Bluetooth receiver unit will be plugged in your mobile phone and will decode and store images. Using the throwable ball camera is as easy as playing catch. Hold the ball in your hand and toss it as high as you can. Once the ball is an upright position it will start clicking pictures at specific time intervals and, as mentioned above, transmit it to your mobile device via the Bluetooth transmitter. Think of all the fun pictures you can click from an angle that is not possible with the current lot of digital cameras. The Flee is in a concept stage and has not been developed into a practical reality as yet.”

Although this is a toy, I think this might work in wedding situation. Imagine a ceremony on the beach, predrinks outside or even a dancefloor. (if you have enough light). You would get some unique images. I have used a camera with wide angle lens on a monopod but sounds so cool.
I know what I want from Santa this Christmas!

Engagement Shoot – Loving winter!

Lichelle and Pieter are getting married next year in March. We got the chance a few weeks ago to do an Engagement shoot for them. Although it was winter we had the most amazing day.  We did the shoot about 10 min from Durbanville  on the way out to Malmesbury.  Winter time creates the most amazing backdrops and with the couple being so much fun we had all the ingredients for some amazing photos.
Below are my favourate three photos of the day.

Is paper obsolete?

I am lucky enough in that I received an Ipad this month. I am actually doing this post from my Ipad.
Great device. Works great as a portable portfolio. A laptop can probably do everything this can do, but this such a luxury toy. Enjoying it immensely.

The future of gadgets poses the question whether prints, albums, books etc are still needed. Are we moving in the direction that Facebook, iPhones, blogs are becoming our history recorder. Are we still gonna have prints in 5 years time. Will we have albums? Will your mother still take a little clicks album with the Reprints and go brag at work… I sure hope so.

Winter is here

After about 20 weddings this year already we are getting to the close of the 2009/10 Wedding season. It really has been hectic getting everybody’s photos out on time. We have seen some amazing new venues
and also had the privilege to do a few destination weddings.  The budget’s also feeling it as we bought a few new “toys” to play with on Saturdays. It’s great to have break on the horizon and this gives me some time for blog updates, portfolio updates, marketing and research. I have finally updated all my 2009 weddings and will hopefully be updating 2010 weddings in the next week or twoWe have some family shoots booked for the month of June. So drop me an email if you are interested.

On a personal note I just can’t wait to be spending some quality time with my gorgeous wife. We also recently got three little kittens from the Animal Anti-cruelty league and they are growing by the day! Feels like we are making the trip to pet shop every three days! They love my office and I will probably start to teach them the secrets of Photoshop soon.

Thanks again for visiting my website. I will be updating regularly in the next few weeks.

Good luck for Bafana for the SWC!

NEWS NEWS NEWS

Wow! This year flew by! I was still charging batteries for the new season back in August and suddenly it’s December and I am 19 weddings behind on my blog! Not to mention a few other shoots.

I posted the six September weddings this morning. And all the October weddings will follow soon.

Other news is that we (Iza and I) are getting married in less than a month’s time. Although I see weddings every Saturday, I only now realise all the time and effort that goes into organising a wedding and I have newfound respect for all the bride and grooms out there.

This stunning photo was taken at our engagement shoot a while back by a friend of mine. Sybrand Cilliers is really one of the great photographers in South Africa. Check out his work at www.prophotography.co.za

The question I get the most is: “Who is going to do YOUR photos?”  Well, his name is Greg Lumley.  Another GREAT photographer and a good friend of ours. He will be the only one working that day while the rest of us are going to be dancing on the ceiling! Check out his work at www.greglumley.com

Through all the excitement and festivities I hopefully will be updating my site a bit.
Hope you have an awesome December!

Conner’s Corner

DSC_9062-2

Tanya contacted me about two months ago regarding little Conner’s birthday party. He turned ONE and she wanted some natural family pics of their family as well as some of Conner’s friends. Tanya and Lyle moved from Upington to the Cape about a year ago.

It’s a small world and after some chatting we realized I did a few of their friend’s weddings as well. Tanya is a photographer herself and it was a compliment that she asked me to do their shoot. Although weddings can be stressful and fast paced, you can to a degree predict what’s going to happen. With kids…whoa. No chance!

I enjoyed the party almost as much as Conner and his two little sidekicks!

Dogs and Cats

FrotMe and Iza had the opportunity last Saturday to go and spend some time with the Animal Welfare Society in Stellenbosch. I was a bit nervous about what to expect but  WOW did we enjoy it.

They are based in Stellenbosch. Their goal is education, sterilisation and finding good homes for animals. We played with some of the cutest dogs, cats and even a rabbit!

As they are constantly trying to find homes for cats and dogs we did a project for them to take some photos to use on their website.

Their website is: www.animalwelfare-stb.wetpaint.com if you would like more info.

I really want to encourage you to pop around if you get a chance. The animals love attention  and even just 15 min will make their day.

Die was onvergeetlik. Hoop ek loop julle erens op n troue raak.Voorspoedige 2009!!!

Oor en uit.

Roadtrip

Dit was rerig great gewees.

Websites

Yip, My blog en group was bietjie stil gewees afgelope tyd. Ek het nou weer 5 troues in n ry, so die break was rerig great gewees.

2. Vliegure. Spandeer soveel tyd as moontlik op jou kamera.

Ek gaan bietjie vandag gesels oor punt 1.

1. YouTube.com
Tik gerus “photography” of iets soortgelyks. Daar is letterlik duisende videos oor fotografie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUOfBY05_K8

Gaan soek dit in CNA as jy kans kry.

Ek soek eerste by BhPhotovideo in die VSA. Speel gerus bietjie op hulle site rond.

Ek hoop jy kon darem iets wys word. Speel bietjie op my blog/site rond as jy n kans kry. http://www.rcphoto.za.net/

Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk: Kaapstad

So staan ek toe mos 6:30 op vanoggend.
My opsies was samoesas en…. samoesas.

Photoshop, lightroom of ACDSee

As jy nie sooo rekenaargeletterd is nie sou ek verseker dié voorstel.
Picassa
Google het Picassa uitgebring in 2004 as ‘n gratis program.
Gevolgtrekking

Admin Admin Admin

Sjoe, wat ‘n jaar..

Dit was omtrent woelig dié jaar. En dit was julle klomp wat my so besig gehou het. Sonder julle sou ek Saterdae my tv-kas afgeneem het.

Winter is ons troufotograwe se herlaaityd.

3. Website

My website is ook UITEINDELIK opgedateer. Gaan loer gerus bietjie as julle n kans kry. http://www.rcphoto.za.net/

4. Ander fotografie

Groete

Terug in die regte wêreld…

Die naweek in Tulbach was rerig fantasties gewees.

So elke keer as iemand n foto neem dan gaan my flash af.
